Geography Essentials
Hey!
Happy New Year to all you settlement fans!
I have just stumbled across the following link which is useful for pupils aswell as having teacher resources.
The menu on the right hand side has a FAQ section which gives some useful information on the endings of place names and whether their origin is from Roman, Saxon or Norman roots.
Short but sweet infromation but the channel 4 website looks very helpful for many of the QCA units.

Lesson Idea
I have found another website that gives an in depth knowledge of terms required for secondary students, however it has given me an idea for a lesson that could be used with Key Stage 2 children.
Using the Old Maps Website children can find a map of their local area and explore how the area looked several years ago.
Then, using the Ordinance Survey Website the children could find a recent map of the area and could compare changes in the settlement over a period of time. This lesson would help to build on knowledge of settlesments but would also increase competence in ICT capabilities and using the internet.

Increase subject knowledge!
This site is aimed at revision for GSCE students however I think it is a good resource to help build subject knowledge. There is a whole course on Settlements that will give a deeper level of information than the Primary Geography websites.
Useful Revision Site
The BBC Bitesize Website is very useful for developing subject knowledge of urban and rural environments. It defines what a settlement is aswell as describing key features of different types of settlements.

Schemes of Work

Unit 9 is of most relevance to the area of settlements. It has close links to the schemes of work in history.
The Standards website which is hyperlinked above splits the unit of work into 6 sections which contain a sequence of activities with related objectives and outcomes.
